Here at Derm for Dudes, we’re constantly trying new skincare products. If you see it on our site, you know a product’s been thoroughly vetted—that means we pore over labels and user reviews before trying them out for ourselves. While we test each product on its own merit and try not to be influenced by sleek branding and clever marketing, we begin to notice patterns—some brands stand out, some fall short, and some are inconsistent. Today, we’re doing a deep dive on the Jack Black skincare line.
Derm for Dudes is here to give you the lowdown on who’s behind the brand (hint: it’s not your favorite rock-and-roll comedy actor), what they’re all about, and what sets them apart from the competition. Finally, we’ll explore eight of their products—what they claim, what we think, and what customers are saying. Without further ado, let’s jump into Jack Black skincare.
Jack Black: the Brand
First, let’s get one thing out of the way—no, the Jack Black brand is not associated with the actor. In fact, Jack Black the brand preceded the actor’s rise to fame by a few years.
So, who is behind Jack Black? The brand was founded by Emily Dalton and husband and wife duo Curran and Jeff Dandurand all the way back in the year 2000. Dalton, a Texas native, began working in the cosmetics industry after earning an MBA in marketing. She and Curran met while working for cosmetics giant Mary Kay, and the pair soon began discussing the chasm between women’s and men’s personal care.
At that time, the industry was disproportionately dominated by women’s products, while there existed significant gaps in the men’s personal care market. But with the quality products and the right marketing approach, Dalton, Curran, and Jeff knew men would come around to the idea of investing in quality personal care products.
Jack Black launched with only 10 products and has since grown to more than 100. Their extensive product line addresses nearly every hair or skincare need imaginable—including some traditionally found in women’s skincare, like anti-aging serums and de-puffing eye creams.
Product Philosophy
Jack Black has an intuitive sense of what guys want in skincare—uncomplicated, quality products. Each formulation is reviewed for safety and efficacy before being tested by dermatologists and consumers—but never animals.
In each Jack Black product, you’ll find nourishing botanical extracts, essential fatty acids, anti-aging actives, proteins and vitamins, and gentle exfoliants. Whenever possible, they use organic ingredients and leave out colorants, alcohol, sulfates, parabens, and animal products. What’s more, they meticulously stay on top of current research and regulations to ensure their products don’t contain anything that’s bad for the skin or bad for the planet.
Price and Value
Jack Black’s commitment to top-of-the-line formulas is evident in each of their products—and it’s also the reason they tend to be pricier than competitors. If you’re used to drugstore prices, you may feel some sticker shock at checkout. But Jack Black’s product quality is noticeably better than drugstore equivalents.
For example, their Double-Duty Facial Moisturizer SPF 20 is $30 for a 3.3 oz tube—at $9.09 per ounce, that is steep. Compare that to Nivea’s Maximum Hydration Face Lotion With SPF 15, which is decidedly more affordable at $9.29, or $3.72 per fluid ounce. If budget is your main concern, Nivea is the winner. But in terms of formula, Nivea doesn’t hold a candle to Jack Black.
Another thing we love about Jack Black products is that you tend to need only a small amount of product for great results. This was something we saw time and time again when researching Jack Black: a bottle lasts for months. So yes, you may be paying more, but you won’t need to restock as frequently as you might with lower quality products.
Product Line
Jack Black’s extensive product line means there’s something for every guy—whether you need a no-nonsense SPF moisturizer or an age-defying serum to combat sun damage. Their product line is always growing as they continually develop products to cater to those with more specific skincare needs. Here, we’ll look at eight of our favorite Jack Black products and so you can get a sense of what you can expect from the Jack Black brand.
Jack Black Pit Boss
The Claim
"This roll-up stick featuring our popular All-Over scent glides on easily to deliver long-lasting odor and wetness protection.”
The Derm for Dudes Verdict
We love the way this product smells and find it works as-described to control perspiration and pit odor. It contains aloe and Vitamin E, which may make it a little less irritating than other deodorants; however, some customers have reported irritation. This product contains aluminum, which, while a supremely effective antiperspirant, may be concerning for guys who want to limit their exposure. At $22 a pop, this stuff is more than double the price of its drugstore equivalent. If you have the budget, this is a great choice; if not, don’t sweat it—you can find similar products at a more affordable price.
What Customers Are Saying
Pit Boss has overwhelmingly positive user reviews—it “has a great smell that lasts all day” and “doesn’t leave a mark on clothes.” The scent, says one user, “is mild and sexy, nothing too overbearing.” One common complaint is the “wasteful design” that leaves a significant portion of the product in the bottom of the container when rolled all the way up. Some users report “clumping,” which may be mitigated by using a smaller amount of product.
Jack Black Big Sir™ Refreshing Body Lotion
The Claim
“This lightweight, soothing lotion with Organic Aloe Vera and Hyaluronic Acid offers breathable texture, helps rejuvenate the skin, and helps boost skin’s moisture content.”
The Derm for Dudes Verdict
We really love this stuff mostly because we’re huge fans of the refreshing scent. We also like that it’s a lightweight formula; many body lotions—particularly drugstore brands—can feel like wearing an extra layer. Another factor that sets it apart from drugstore competitors is that it’s packed with hyaluronic acid, which helps with signs of aging (definitely not common in body lotions!). A large bottle costs $38 so while it might be a little out-of-budget for some, it’s money well spent.
What Customers Are Saying
Big Sir lotion has tons of 4- and 5-star reviews. Like us, users love the scent, lightweight texture, and fast-absorbing formula. There are quite a few reports of the scent being “overpowering,” however, so if you prefer more subtle fragrances, this may not be the product for you.
Jack Black Beard Oil
The Claim
“This exclusive blend of certified organic natural oils, potent antioxidants and vitamins helps to prevent dry, itchy skin and achieve a conditioned, healthy-looking beard.”
The Derm for Dudes Verdict
This beard oil is a must-have for guys with facial hair. As with most Jack Black products, we love its mild scent, and unlike other beard oils, it doesn’t leave any greasy residue. This is definitely superior to other beard oils we’ve tried—it dries quickly and makes your beard a little less frizzy. At $28 for a one-ounce bottle, it’s pretty steep, but you only need a small amount of product so it offers decent value for money.
What Customers Are Saying
Like us, customers love this product. Says one Amazon user: “I bought this stuff a year ago and just ran out. A tiny amount works really well and smells fantastic.” Most positive reviews comment on how easily it applies and how good it smells. Negative reviews are fairly inconsistent in their criticism, though several report the product to be drying.
Jack Black Turbo Wash
The Claim
“This dual-purpose, sulfate-free body and hair cleanser washes away dirt and sweat without overdrying, leaving the entire body feeling revitalized for peak performance.”
The Derm for Dudes Verdict
As much as we love the time-saving element of a 2-in-1 hair and body wash, the big selling point on this product is the energizing rosemary and eucalyptus, which offer relief for tired muscles and an invigorating shower experience that opens up the airways and leaves you feeling extra pumped after a workout. Of course, those same essential oils can be irritating for guys with sensitive skin.
What Customers Are Saying
A whopping 84% of Amazon reviewers gave this product 5-stars. While most comment on its price point ($50 a bottle is eye-wateringly expensive), they almost unanimously go on to say how much they love the invigorating scent and skin-nourishing formula.
Jack Black Protein Booster Skin Serum
The Claim
"The silky liquid texture allows powerful, efficacious ingredients to be readily absorbed to help improve skin tone, help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and help protect from future damage.”
The Derm for Dudes Verdict
Like many guys, we’re relatively new to skin serums. But this Protein Booster serum makes a noticeable difference—skin is softer, fine lines are less pronounced, and it gives a “glow” that’s hard to describe but noticeable. At more than 60 bucks a pop, it’s an expensive addition to your skincare lineup. But if you’re only going to add one anti-aging product to your rotation, this should be it. Plus, a little goes a long way.
What Customers Are Saying
Like most Jack Black products, this has overwhelmingly positive reviews on Amazon. There are tons of repeat buyers, with users reporting that it has “completely changed [their] skin for the better” and “[plumped] up the skin and [its] elasticity.”
Jack Black Oil-Free Sun Guard SPF 45 Sunscreen
The Claim
“This oil-free, vitamin-enriched, water- and sweat-resistant lotion offers superior broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and absorbs quickly without greasy or heavy residue.”
The Derm for Dudes Verdict
If you’re used to drugstore sunscreen, you’re in for a pleasant surprise with this top-of-the-line formula. This stuff stays put for hours in the water, sand, and sun and doesn’t feel heavy like cheaper alternatives. It doesn’t leave any weird white cast either, making it great for daily use. Also, the winner of the best everyday sunscreen in our recently published Best Sunscreen for Men [2023].
What Customers Are Saying
Amazon users tend to be picky about sunscreen, but there’s a solid consensus about this one: it’s comfortable, long-lasting, and it works. Critical reviews tend to mention the price point. A few report skin irritation, however, so be sure to test it on a patch of skin before applying liberally.
Jack Black Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser
The Claim
“A 2-in-1 liquid cleanser and toner that removes deep-down dirt and oil for clear, smooth, shave-ready skin.”
The Derm for Dudes Verdict
This is a super-nourishing formula that definitely leaves your skin feeling soft and hydrated, but not “stripped” of its natural oils. Compared to equivalent women’s face washes, $35 is pretty reasonable when considering the quality of the formula, and you only need about half a pump to get a great lather, so a bottle can last for the better part of the year.
What Customers Are Saying
This is a regular purchase for many customers, with reviews lauding it as “by far [their] favorite face wash” and “the best face wash out there.” Like us, users like the way it cleanses without drying skin. It’s worth noting that several users with difficult skin conditions like acne and eczema reported improvement after using this stuff.
Jack Black Double-Duty Face Moisturizer SPF 20
The Claim
“Lightweight, emollient moisturizer provides lasting hydration and helps improve the skin’s overall appearance.”
The Derm for Dudes Verdict
We’re always on the lookout for a solid daily SPF moisturizer, and Double-Duty face moisturizer is cream of the crop. It’s got a nice list of nourishing ingredients and offers a good amount of sun protection for a daily moisturizer. It may not be “rich” enough for drier skin or drier climates, but it’s an overall fantastic day-to-day product.
What Customers Are Saying
With more than 6,000 5-star reviews on Amazon, it’s clear that customers love this stuff. Users like the lightweight, fast-absorbing formula and the fact that it’s unscented. And while it’s pricey, users report that a single 3.3oz bottle can last almost a year.
Final Thoughts
Having reviewed a solid handful of their products, pored over their ingredients lists, and compared their claims vs. their customers’, one thing is clear: you pay a premium for Jack Black products, and you get what you pay for. Many brands are decidedly hit or miss—some products work great, some leave a lot to be desired. Jack Black is super consistent, and they seem to understand on a cellular level what guys want: quality, utility, and value-for-money. So even if Jack Black products are a little pricier than what you’re comfortable with, we urge you to pay the difference so you can feel the difference. We were skeptical too—but we haven’t been disappointed yet.
